The Finest Fishing Around

Fly Fishing Trips

A World-Class Fly Fishing Experience

Montana Fly Fishing
at its finest

The Bighorn River is considered by many to be the finest trout fishery in America.  The river begins in Fort Smith, MT and flows almost compass north to its confluence with the Yellowstone River near Custer, MT.

The most famous stretch of trout water is from the Afterbay to Bighorn Fishing Access.  This “A to B” section is one of the most iconic pieces of trout water in the United States. We fish this section almost daily, as it is only a 20 minute drive from our front door.   However we specialize in more intimate and secluded sections of the lower river.  This helps us to get away from some of the crowds and to enjoy the Bighorn in relative solitude.  It is not uncommon to land a 20″ trout during your stay, and even first time fly anglers WILL have success!

Trusted Experts on Montana's Bighorn River

We hire only the very best independent contractors in the valley.   Our guides have floated the Bighorn literally thousands of times.  Most are former (or even current) #1 guides from other local lodges.  RRO guides regularly have over 60+ YEARS of combined experience on the water and can handle any situation or special request that you may have.

Premium Fly Fishing, Gear, & experiences

Our guides use  professional drift boats that are clean and well kept. Most days will include a mixture of dry flies, streamers and nymphs. We hire guides that are versatile and offer a well-rounded fishing experience. All our fishing is Catch and Release as we view the fish as our business partners! You can arrive with no gear whatsoever and our guides will provide everything needed for your trip including flies, tackle, rods, waders, a comfortable stream side lunch and drinks.

The Bighorn River is a tailwater fishery, meaning that it comes from Yellowtail Dam. This is a 525-foot-tall dam, and the water comes from the bottom of the lake. This means that the flows are cold and regulated. When every other river in Montana is blown out (and looks like chocolate milk) we are crystal clear and have some of the best spring and summer fly fishing opportunities in the entire United States.

On the Bighorn, it is common for each angler, (regardless of ability) to land 5-10 trout every day, sometimes many more! We also offer top secret fly fishing for trophy tout (over 24 inches) June-July.  These days won’t have the numbers of the Bighorn, but the quality of trout is outstanding.

“We are duck guys first, but don’t miss out on our fly-fishing trips. We have decades of professional experience. At River Rock Outfitters, we offer Orvis quality, without the Orvis price.” – Jeremy DeVries, Owner
