Duck Season Is Underway at River Rock Outfitters!
Well, here we go again! Duck season is officially underway at River Rock Outfitters, and we’re off to a great start!
We’ve got all of our boats back on the water, and our first 15 hunters got their limits every day! I’d say that’s a pretty good way to kick off another season on the Bighorn River.
After a short break, our duck season reopens October 24 and runs all the way through January 19. We’re looking forward to another great season chasing ducks on the Bighorn!
We’re Completely Booked for Duck Season!
One thing I want to mention is that our 2026–2027 duck season is completely full. And when I say full, I mean we couldn’t take another duck hunter if we wanted to!
Between state regulations that limit us and our own physical capacity, every available spot is spoken for. We’re incredibly fortunate to have so many loyal, returning guests. Many of these folks have been hunting with us for years, some even decades and I don’t take that loyalty for granted.
Here’s how our booking process works:
We always give our returning duck hunters the first opportunity to rebook their dates for the following season. Once they’ve had that opportunity, we reach out to our existing fly-fishing clients before opening any remaining dates to new customers on March of each year. By April and Mid May we are usually fully booked.
As you can imagine, that doesn’t leave many openings.If you’re interested in becoming part of our duck hunting program, one of the best ways to get your foot in the door is to come fishing with us!
I’ve always believed that the relationships we build with our guests are just as important as the hunting and fishing themselves. We want folks to come back year after year, and we work hard to make that happen.
We often tell our guests, “Our goals are your goals.” Whether that’s a great day in the duck blind, watching a young hunter shoot their first duck, or simply enjoying time with friends and family, we’re here to help make it happen.
Don’t Forget About Summer Fishing!
While we’re busy with duck season, this is also one of the best times to start thinking about next summer’s fly-fishing trips.
I’ll get into fishing availability and reservations in our fishing blog, so be sure to check that out if you’re thinking about joining us on the Bighorn next summer. Our fishing calendar is similar to our ducks. We purposefully limit our available dates to do our part to reduce pressure on our resource. This provides an intimate private experience rather than overcrowding out favorite places.

After all these years of guiding, I still look forward to the start of every duck season. It’s always great to see familiar faces returning to the lodge, catch up with old friends, and spend another season doing what we love.
